It began life as a minimalist and lightweight browser, but as it’s grown more and more issues have crept in.
If you are experiencing problems, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we take a look at some of the most common flaws and provide guidance on how to fix them.
1. Frozen Tab or Window
Computers seem to have a life of their own; all too often they freeze or stop functioning for no apparent reason. Chrome is no different, sometimes a tab or even an entire window will stop responding.
Thankfully, there is an easy fix.
Press Shift + Esc top open the Chrome Task Manager. It will give you a list of all the running tabs and extensions. Just highlight the one you want to close, and click on End Process.
2. Chrome Clean-Up Tool
If you’re finding that Chrome keeps crashing, refuses to open, or fails to load webpages, there is a chance that you have malware on your system. Getting rid of it is normally a straightforward process, but you might need to work through a few solutions.
The first of these is the Chrome Clean-Up Tool. Unfortunately, it is only available to Windows users, if you’re on a Mac, Google recommends using the highly-popular MalwareBytes.
The tool will scan and remove software that may cause problems for Chrome; that includes malware, but also other suspicious programs, extensions, and plug-ins.

3. Reset Browser Settings
If neither the clean-up tool nor a scan with your standard anti-virus has failed to solve the problem, you should try resetting your browser’s settings.
To do so, click on the Chrome menu (hamburger icon) and follow Settings > Show advanced settings. Then scroll down to the section labelled Reset Settings and click Reset Settings > Reset.
4. Fix Protected System Files

The feature is activated from the Command Prompt. Right-click on the Start menu and select Command Prompt (Admin), then type SFC.EXE /SCANNOW. The scan could take a while, but Windows will let you know when it’s finished and give you the results.
5. Delete User Profile
Sometimes you’ll be presented with an on-screen message that reads “Your profile could not be opened correctly”. As per the message, some features may become unavailable – this could include anything from bookmarks to browser settings.
Once again, there are a few fixes you can try.
Firstly, you can try deleting your profileUse Google Chrome Profiles For Greater Productivity & OrganizationUse Google Chrome Profiles For Greater Productivity & OrganizationI have the way to make your online activities more productive, more organized, and even safer. 6. Delete Web Data File
If re-adding your profile doesn’t fix the issue, you should try deleting Chrome’s Web Data file.
Note: Do not do this unless you are absolutely certain that it’s required and you know what you’re doing.
On Windows, open Explorer and navigate to C:Users[Username]AppDataLocalGoogleChromeUser DataDefault (replacing [Username] with your credentials). Scroll down to the bottom of the list and delete the file called “Web Data”.
On Mac, open the terminal and type cd /Users/[user]/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default Apple remote deployment tool for mac os. (once again, replacing [user] with your own details). Next, type rm -rf History*; rm -rf Web Data;.
On both operating systems, restart your machine, reopen Chrome, and see if your problem is solved.
7. Delete Extensions
As we mentioned at the start, Chrome originally built its reputation on being lightweight and lightning fast. If you run the pure browser with no extensions, it still is. However, Chrome extensions and bookmarkletsThe Best Chrome ExtensionsThe Best Chrome ExtensionsA list of only the best extensions for Google Chrome, including suggestions from our readers.Read More are incredibly useful – most users make use of them.
Naturally, Google has no real control over these third-party add-ins. If you find Chrome is running slowly, they are often the culprit.
Start by removing any that you don’t use regularly – they could be hogging memory. If the problem persists, try disabling all your extensions and re-enabling them one-by-one.
Click on Menu > More Tools > Extensions. Click the checkbox to temporarily disable them, or the rubbish bin to delete them permanently.
8. Edit Chrome Flags
If your browser’s speed is still poor, there is a chance that you’ll need to edit the “Flags”. These are experimental settings offered by Google, so proceed with caution.

10. And If All Else Fails…

Chrome Cleanup Tool Disappears
My Chrome crashes everytime I do absolutely anything on Amazon.com with the exception of signing-in. I finally unstalled Chrome and re-installed, Chrome still crashes when I am the Amazon website. I contacted Amazon and they cannot figure it out as well. HELP!!!!!!!
I fixed Chrome by uninstalling it after a 24 hour trial and by continuing to click on that orange fox that managed to wrap itself around a blue sphere, just like i was doing since before it was called Firefox. I'm using Chrome on my Android phone though, for some strange reason, dealing with ten seconds freezes every time there's an animated gif or something other than plain simple text to deal with.
P.S. I'm using computers, and now phones which is the same, (yes, it is.) for almost two decades now so yeah I'm pretty sure how to deal with temp files and wiping caches and all that you can do to 'fix' things yourself to know that Chrome is beyond all that.
I used to be a big Chrome fan, but have become disenchanted. On my Samsung Android phone with the latest update to both the OS and Chrome, it continually crashes. Chrome will load one page and then just hang there and display the close wait report message saying it needs to close. I reset the phone to factory settings to no avail. I now use Firefox or Phoenix. I have given up on Chrome.
I have been using chromedast for over year in my zip code, that stupid recorder Really hurt trying to get a liver person. Please Please have a live person to call me. Or textt me.
I have trouble downloading extensions from the chrome webstore,it keeps telling me 'the download was interrupted'. Please advise if anyone knows how to solve this issue
Now, when I try to go to Yahoo Mail and several others, I get
'YOUR CONNECTION IS NOT PRIVATE.'
There is no way to log in to anything. All well explained, good advice, for sure. Maybe you guys also know how to fix my little google chrome problem. Got a brand new 16Gb notebook, all works well except the initial opening of chrome, which takes 3 minutes and slows down or interrupts with everything on the computer for those 3 minutes! Once I am in chrome I'm in and all works well and I can open any website or page I need. But how to get rid of the initial problem? Would be great to open it fast like on my older computer on which I only had the old google version and no chrome. Thanks in advance for any assistance!!!
My problem is failed updates more often than not. My little 3 horizontal icon in top right is always red. The only way I have fixed it is to disable most or all my extensions, close Chrome and open it and enable them again. I'd like an easy way of check each one. Is there a running list of ones that are known to cause issues? Like AdBlocker, or Buffer, Dictionary, Pocket, Instapaper.
About the #1 solution, it's not a solution per se. The tab or the page or several of them freeze while we want to access them.
But let's say ok, I close the tab so I'll be able to try again, and the next tab I switch, same problem. Then I close Chrome completely. Reopen it, start from scratch. Works fine for about what 4-5 minutes, and then same issue. Windows 10 is crap on this matter, looks like they really want us to use Edge instead, Firefox crashes, Chrome crashes, we can't even have the browser set by default (or we can until we restart the computer, yeah.. thanks Microsoft, you really want us to find it difficult to use something outside your stuff.FYI, I uninstalled and installed again a brand new fresh version of Chrome. And it works for a while, until the system decides something else.
Anyway, your solution is like saying: find another page to look at, since this one freezes. My issue is: I clicked on CNN.com for the news and many popups happened even tho Popups are turned off but still happened. Since then, my Extensions option in Chrome settings will not open at all. When I click on Extensions, Chrome settings closes. Also, I am not able to use amazon.com site due to site is overtaken by 'Shopping Deals' banner ads that take up 90% of screen. Amazon says it Chrome. Checked in MS Edge, MS IE and Firefox with no issues. Running Trend anti-virus and Adblock Plus. Done Chrome settings reset several times and have uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome. Issue continues. Any help would be appreciated.
I find the most annoying thing to be that in full screen mode the address bar isn't available. To enter a new address you have to exit full screen mode, type the address and the return to full screen mode.
I wonder why Chrome doesn't just mimic Firefox in that matter (auto-hidden address bar).
'Press Shift + Esc top open the..' **to** open. Whoops!

Not sure if this is a Chrome problem or a GMail problem but lately the auto-completion for name does not sort the most popular names in the order it used to.
A few days ago, I began seeing a blue bar across the top of my screen that is most annoying. It covers options that are more useful than the information telling me what site I am currently on, which I already know. I use a Samsung Android. What will make this blue bar go away forever? It has an X in the top left-hand corner that deletes the page. Not a nice addition to Chrome.
Mac tool cart for sale craigslist. PLEASE HELP! Thank you.I still can't stand the feature that uses the back space button as a browser back button. At the least make it an option.
It doesn't use the backspace anymore. Now you have to hit alt-leftarrow.
I don't use chrome because I can't put my bookmarks in the order I want on my bookmark toolbar. Is there a way around that?
Drag and drop the bookmarks in the order that you want them.
Jason, this will solve your tab issue and reduce memory usage https://www.one-tab.com/
Chrome keeps forgetting the tabs from my last session (I have start with last session enabled). Anyone had this issue?
I absolutely refuse to install Flas extension on any of my browser and that includes Chrome. With Chrome I don't need to ! It plays flash video natively.
Yea, that's a great idea for a fix on a Mac. Just type rm -rf History *, and your problems with Chrome will be fixed.
--------------------
Readers, be VERY careful with the 'rm' command. I made a slight typo in the command above - do you see it?
This command will delete everything in the current folder and below. All because of one incorrect space. The command 'rm -rf /*' will wipe everything on your computer, except that I would hope a Mac would block it, perhaps unless prefixed with 'sudo'. Unless there is even more protection than I expect, just type 'sudo rm -rf /*' and you will have no more problems with your Mac. Because your Mac will be an expensive paperweight.
Got rid of Chrome.
I actually just gave Chrome a try again after a couple years of using Firefox exclusively. Chrome DOES load pages faster (at least on my system), but this is the only advantage I have been able to find so far.
With These Extension IDs You Can Enable/Disable Them All, Or In Groups.
